As we usher in the Year of the Pig in our bicentennial year, let us reflect on our Chinese New Year traditions and how they came to be.
Lo hei, kueh bangkit, and the Chingay Parade – the way we celebrate Chinese New Year reflects how the Singapore Chinese identity has evolved over the years. Chinese Singaporeans have integrated into a larger, multiracial whole, and become distinct from Chinese communities elsewhere.
Some traditions, however, are universal across all Chinese families – may you have a joyful reunion dinner tonight! Wishing you good health, good fortune, and lasting prosperity in the new year!
